Upcoming City Council Meeting: July 21, 2025
July 18, 2025

This regular meeting includes approving the purchase of a replacement fire engine, which was included in the three-year budget passed by Council. Expenses are budgeted over the next two fiscal years, not this fiscal year, but it's important to be proactive in confirming the purchase because it takes roughly two years to build the engine for us. According to safety guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association, our current fire engine that responds to all emergency incidents in Berkley, as well as to mutual aid requests from our neighboring communities (“Engine 4”), is at the end of its usable life. Although Engine 4 needs to be phased out of active use, another agency could purchase it for a limited-use reserve apparatus, and there is at least one community in Michigan that would explore this option.
The meeting will also include a matter of approving an application for the transfer of a Class C liquor license for Slows, which plans to open in Downtown Berkley this fall. The entity already holds the liquor license, and this is a matter of approving it for use at the Berkley location. Our City ordinances mandate that the City Council review and decide on such applications.
City Council will also vote to approve the employment contract for our new Downtown Development Authority Director, as well as updated employee union agreements.
