City Council Meeting Recap: March 17, 2025, Regular Meeting
March 24, 2025

Proclamations for the Month of March
Council proclaimed March as Reading Month, Women’s History Month, and Severe Weather Month. Mayor Pro Tem Gavin read a proclamation for Reading Month, emphasizing the importance of literacy in shaping informed, engaged citizens. Councilmember Vilani read a proclamation for Women’s History Month, recognizing the critical role of women as leaders in all aspects of life.
Zoning Ordinance Approvals
Council approved the second reading of several ordinances, making modifications to modernize regulations and align with the new Zoning Ordinance and our Master Plan. The first reading of these ordinances occurred at the regular meeting on February 24, 2025.
With these updates, the new Zoning Ordinance was approved by Council and will go into effect starting April 16, 2025. The Zoning Ordinance is available in its entirety by clicking here.
Updated Fee Schedule
Staff shared an updated fee schedule for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, adopted by Council. The fee schedule identifies all departmental fees and is available on our website. One of the changes in the new fee schedule involves streamlining the option for residents to purchase a garbage toter from DPW – soon, you’ll be able to fill out a form if you need to purchase one and the cost will be reflected in your next water bill.
Berkley Marquee Lease Agreement
Council approved a renewed lease agreement between the City of Berkley and the owner of the building that houses the Berkley marquee on 12 Mile. Although the marquee has been used and maintained by the City since the Berkley Theatre’s closure in 1993, the marquee is part of the building’s facade and is owned by the building owners. The City has leased the marquee since the theatre’s closure, utilizing it for community announcements and investing in its maintenance as part of the terms.
The lights will be turned off on the marquee for critical structural maintenance starting on April 1. The DDA is funding this maintenance, and more information about the lights being turned off is available by clicking here.
