January 29, 2025

New Leadership

We're excited to welcome Jessica Stover as our new Human Resources Director! A fellow Berkley resident, Jessica brings 10 years of HR experience to the role, including five years in the City of Southfield. She's looking forward to supporting our city staff so we can continue providing great service to our community.

Community Recognition

You helped make this happen! Thanks to our community's strong civic engagement, Berkley earned third place in Dr. Nat Pernick’s 2024 Voting Challenge with 80.41% participation in the last election. The $500 award from Dr. Pernick will support Berkley-Huntington Woods Youth Assistance, helping local families and youth right here in our community.

Annual Financial Report

Our Finance Department and independent auditor presented the City of Berkley’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, showing Berkley's financial health from June 2023 through June 2024. You can read a more detailed recap of the report on our website by clicking here.

  • Our unassigned fund balance remains healthy at $4.7 million, meeting City Council's policy guidelines
  • Strong performance in our Solid Waste fund means we've eliminated yard waste tag requirements for 2025
  • We maintain zero general obligation debt, and we're getting closer to finishing paying our share of the regional George Kuhn Drainage District debt
  • We continue to maintain strong funding levels for Public Safety retirement benefits, exceeding healthy standards
  • Some procedures needed updating due to staff transitions, and our finance team is already implementing improvements

Looking Forward

Council adopted a two-year strategic organizational framework to better guide our work in serving you. This roadmap will help us focus on what matters most to our community and reflects months of collaboration between staff and City Council. More information about this framework, including regular progress updates, will be shared in the coming months.
