Berkley City Council Selects Crystal VanVleck as Next City Manager

After an extensive search process led by consulting firm GovHR/MGT, the Berkley City Council voted on October 7, 2024, to hire Crystal VanVleck as the City of Berkley’s next City Manager. This appointment is contingent upon a background check and successful contract negotiations, which will begin in earnest.
VanVleck holds a Master of Urban Planning Degree from Wayne State University. She brings over 10 years of municipal experience to the City of Berkley, including over nine years with the City of Oak Park where she currently serves as Deputy City Manager of Community Services.
“I’m honored to have been selected to serve the City of Berkley as the next City Manager and am excited to join the Berkley team to help continue the City’s forward momentum,” said VanVleck.
“I'm delighted with our decision to hire Crystal VanVleck as our new City Manager! Her excitement and enthusiasm for the position is palpable,” said Mayor Bridget Dean, “She brings solid municipal government experience, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of our community to the position. I look forward to working with her and continuing to move Berkley forward.”
The City Council unanimously voted to hire VanVleck, noting her municipal government experience and passion for the Berkley community.
“I’m elated by the experience, passion, understanding, and innovation that Crystal will bring to every facet of city services,” said Mayor Pro Tem Ross Gavin, “I’m confident she will ably lead our staff of highly qualified professionals as we strive to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and continue Berkley’s progress forward.”
Councilmember Dennis Hennen agreed, “I'm thrilled to welcome Ms. VanVleck to Berkley. Her experience and the impressive portfolio of projects she has led in Oak Park give me great confidence in her ability to guide our city forward. I look forward to the positive impact she'll have on our community and its future.”
